Construction update

An important enhancement to end-of-life services is coming to the North Country in 2011.   Hospice of Jefferson County, Inc. is constructing a hospice residence, which will provide round-the-clock care to patients who cannot be supported at home.   The Hospice Center will accommodate up to eight patients at a time in a home-like environment.  Private suites with patios and comfortable facilities for visiting families will provide an alternative to institutional care.  Construction of the residence, located on Gotham Street in Watertown, began in October 2010, with completion anticipated by the end of this year.

The Boards of Directors of Hospice and the Hospice Foundation encouraged local firms to participate in the design and construction of the facility.   Aubertine and Currier Architects designed the building; Bernier and Carr Engineers are providing construction management services; and the prime contractors are all local firms, including Purcell Construction, W.D. Bach, Creg Systems, Vespa Sand and Gravel, and Big Apple Music.    The County of Jefferson and several towns and villages have provided invaluable support through the initial stages of construction.

The project is being funded by support from numerous generous donors, and a state grant secured by former State Senator Darrel Aubertine.   Hospice continues to seek support from the community to complete the project and furnish and equip the residence.   Opportunities remain for recognition of major gifts, but donations of any amounts are gratefully received.

Information about the project and how individuals can help can be obtained by calling Hospice at 315-788-7323.

The Hospice residence will ensure that all in need, regardless of their financial circumstances, receive end-of-life care that respects their dignity, manages their pain, and provides for their comfort.   The unwavering support that this community has provided Hospice of Jefferson County over its twenty-five years of service is the foundation upon which this residence will truly rest.

Construction Update

August 1, 2011

Contractors have been working steadily since March to prepare the Hospice Residence and offices for opening later this year. As can be seen from these recent photos, the project is proceeding rapidly.  The structure is composed of two wings, with the residence on the southeast of the property, and the office wing on the northwest.  Connecting the wings is a corridor off which are located a living room, dining room, and kitchen.

This week, the interior of the residence is being painted, while the drywall crew will be finishing up the office wing.  Also this week, exterior siding will continue; curbing will be installed; and the gas line completed.  In the weeks ahead, crews will begin painting the office wing, install exterior doors, finish interior trim, and begin flooring in the residence.
